They said I was brave.
That’s how it all started.
At first, I wondered how, exactly, I was being brave. I mean, all I thought I was doing was just not taking no for an answer. Continuing to push past the specialists telling me I had this or that or this.
But, then I started to get it.
When you have endometriosis, you’re in chronic pain. And I’m not talking about pain, like back pain, I mean – body wrenching, why-is-this-happening, ghost-pain. It’s like it becomes you.
It wears you out. It’s writhing. It never stops.
Because of that pain, when you couple it with the eventual hopeless feeling you get after being misdiagnosed multiple times, it starts to feel easier to give up and let it take you.
Trust me, I went there a few times.
Each time, though, I’d push on and keep fighting and because I have a platform like radio, I’d share my story. Other women would come forward and message me, telling me how brave I was.
Looking back on it, I feel kind of brave now. Not that I’m patting myself on the back, no, I’m calling to the community of women that helped me feel that way. They gave me a sense of purpose.
And that, right there, is the namesake of braave, inc.
To inspire bravery and provide support to women battling endometriosis.
“So, Shawnda…why the double-a??” a friend asked me…
Nothing fancy about that. The simple truth is that we really believed in the word brave, we felt it embodied everything we’d want to acheive as an organization…but, “brave [dot] org” was taken, so we tossed in an extra “a” and here we are.
As we go, I’m going to share more of my story here through written articles and videos on this blog. We’ll also be sharing the stories of other women, their failures, triumphs, as well as stories from their family members.
My husband Dave will be sharing a lot too.
In the meantime, stay tuned. If you’re fighting endometriosis, or think you may be fighting it, stay braave…and please, do not hesitate to reach out to us. If you’d like to read a little more about our core mission in stamping out endometriosis, you can do that here.
